Waste Management

We’re committed to minimising the resources used throughout our operations and recognise that resource recovery is an important part of this commitment. The major areas of resource use and waste production for our business are the construction and management of our networks and the operation of our offices and contact centres. Much of the waste produced can be avoided, reused and/or recycled.

We have developed a company-wide waste action plan for waste streams across the business and are a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant. In 2008/2009 we:

  • Reused or recycled more than 93% of our network waste;
  • Introduced paperless billing to our consumer customers - potentially saving up to 60 million sheets of paper per year;
  • Undertook waste audits and analysis to better inform our understanding of waste generated through our offices and call centres; and
  • Achieved more than a 50% increase in our mobile phone recycling through MobileMuster.
