Our new SIM card packaging

We've made some changes to our SIM card packaging so that it's better for our customers and for our environment.

You'll start to see the new SIM card packaging this year, and by the time it's fully rolled out in 2012 we'll be:

  • Recycling around 14 Tonnes of plastic used in our standard Prepay SIM cards annually

  • Reducing the amount of paper used in our Prepay SIM card starter kits by 60%, saving over 50 Tonnes of paper annually

Vodafone is a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant and we've made a commitment to improve our packaging to make it more sustainable.

Small changes can make a big difference

Consider that Vodafone, working with our suppliers, produces millions of SIM cards every year. They allow our customers to use their Prepay or Postpay mobiles, mobile broadband, tablets and other mobile devices to connect to our network.

So what may seem like a small change can actually make a big difference when it's all added up.

More about what's changing in our SIM card packaging

We're now recycling the extra plastic card that surrounds our Prepay SIM cards, so it's easier for our customers to just plug the SIM card straight into their mobile device.
This change will save around 14 Tonnes of ABS plastic from possibly ending up in landfill each year. By recycling the extra plastic before it even reaches our customers we're ensuring that it doesn't end up in the rubbish tip which can take hundreds of years to decompose.

We've also reduced the amount of paper in the outer packaging of our Prepay SIM starter kits and removed any additional PVC plastic windows, making it easier for our customers to recycle at home.

All of the paper packaging is sourced from sustainably managed forests, certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). The paper contains 10% recycled paper content.

Our next step is to work with our suppliers to find ways to further reduce the amount of plastic that is used in the SIM card manufacturing process.

So this is just the start. We'll continue to look for ways to keep reducing the environmental impact of our SIM cards and packaging, and other packaged products we provide to our customers.
