Our new 850MHz network

As part of our Vodafone network plan we are rolling out a network on a new frequency, 850MHz.

The 850MHz frequency provides a number of advantages for our customers. Because of the lower frequency (compared to other frequencies used on the Vodafone network), 850MHz is able to better penetrate through obstacles - such as buildings. This improved signal strength means data can be transmitted to a compatible device faster than when there is poor signal strength.

You can check the location of existing 850MHz sites and where we're planning to introduce additional 850MHz coverage by visiting our coverage checker.

850MHz Frequency

Our 850MHz network is designed to deliver our customers better call quality and fewer dropped calls, plus better data speeds, both for compatible smartphones and mobile broadband devices.

Better Results

Adding 850MHz capability increases the overall coverage capability of the existing Vodafone network and we've opted to roll it out in major metropolitan areas first as that's where the bulk of our calls and data usage occurs.

By implementing 850MHz and shifting the usage between that and our other frequencies (900 MHz and 2100MHz) we can deliver better results for our customers, whether you're on an 850MHz device or not. This is because 'traffic' will be split amongst our networks. Whereas previously those customers with an 850MHz compatible device would have used the existing networks, now the call and data traffic for those customers will move to the new network where it's available, resulting in an improved experience for customers.

850MHz is a great complementary technology to our existing network, and as we roll it out alongside our existing networks, our expectation is that our customers as a whole will benefit. Our expansion plans are aggressive and you can keep up to date with how we are going in your area by visiting our Vodafone network coverage page. Coverage Map

Key

Standard Coverage: Calls and text We cover 94% of places you live and work to help you make and receive calls, as well as send and receive TXT and PXT® messages. All Vodafone 3G phones (2100MHz) are supported in locations with Standard Coverage.

Regional Coverage: Mobile internet Our 900MHz network delivers extended coverage that takes you further than our Standard Coverage into parts of regional Australia. Slower download speeds are generally experienced within this area of typically 300Kbps - 1.5Mbps*.

National roaming coverage If you're in rural Victoria and Tasmania, you have the option to arrange for national roaming coverage for an additional access fee.

New 850 network We're building a new 850 network (3G 850MHz) across 2011 and it should result in a better experience, improved coverage and faster data speeds if you've got a compatible device and you are within an 850 coverage area. Outdoor Outdoor Our services will be mostly limited to outdoor locations.

Standard Coverage: Mobile internet Download speeds are typically 300Kbps - 3Mbps within major metropolitan areas*. All Vodafone 3G phones (2100MHz) are supported in locations with Standard Coverage.

New 850 network - planned We're currently working on improving our coverage in these areas.

*This map is only an estimate of the coverage that can be expected at the nominated locations. Actual speeds and coverage achieved vary due to factors such as building construction, user numbers, local conditions, hardware, software, download source and general internet traffic.
