The 850MHz frequency provides a number of advantages for our customers. Because of the lower frequency (compared to other frequencies used on the Vodafone network), 850MHz is able to better penetrate through obstacles - such as buildings. This improved signal strength means data can be transmitted to a compatible device faster than when there is poor signal strength.
You can check the location of existing 850MHz sites and where we're planning to introduce additional 850MHz coverage by visiting our coverage checker.

Our 850MHz network is designed to deliver our customers better call quality and fewer dropped calls, plus better data speeds, both for compatible smartphones and mobile broadband devices.
Adding 850MHz capability increases the overall coverage capability of the existing Vodafone network and we've opted to roll it out in major metropolitan areas first as that's where the bulk of our calls and data usage occurs.
By implementing 850MHz and shifting the usage between that and our other frequencies (900 MHz and 2100MHz) we can deliver better results for our customers, whether you're on an 850MHz device or not. This is because 'traffic' will be split amongst our networks. Whereas previously those customers with an 850MHz compatible device would have used the existing networks, now the call and data traffic for those customers will move to the new network where it's available, resulting in an improved experience for customers.
850MHz is a great complementary technology to our existing network, and as we roll it out alongside our existing networks, our expectation is that our customers as a whole will benefit. Our expansion plans are aggressive and you can keep up to date with how we are going in your area by visiting our Vodafone network coverage page.
