Meet Our 2011 World Of Difference Participants

Each year we receive a fantastic selection of candidates, that represent a huge variety of Australian charities.

There are no limits or restrictions to the type of work that you could provide to your charity or for the type of Charity that you would like to work for.

For new ideas or inspiration please read our current and previous World of Difference winners stories to see what these successful applicants have set out to achieve.

Therese Howell

Cause: Limbs4life

www.limbs4life.com

Therese hopes to establish the first 'Australian Amputee Children and Youth Service' to work alongside medical staff and hospitals through a referral program, providing social and sporting opportunities for families with amputee children.

The service aims to provide better support to parents and families by putting them in contact with other parents and caretakers who have previously worked through such experiences. By building this relationship at an early stage of their journey, Therese hopes to help parents learn how to handle grief, concerns, issues, and build adaption and successes to benefit the children in need.

Emma O'Connell

Cause: Musicians Making a Difference (MMAD)

www.mmad.org.au

Emma will be working for MMAD, where she hopes to bring homeless and traumatised youth from the streets to the stage where they can feel inspired and empowered to make their own difference in the community.

Her key goals for the year are to extend MMAD's Youth camps to an outreach program to remote or isolated areas of Australia to support underachieving teens and to work with the Juvenile Justice System to coordinate and promote a MMAD Music Conference 'ONE'.  Through 'One' the Australian music industry will educate and support young Australians to improve their physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

Lisa Clarke

Charity: Swags for the Homeless
www.swags.org.au

Lisa will partner with existing charities supporting homelessness to ensure backpack beds are distributed to the homeless in need. She will be working with local schools to develop teacher aids in line with school curriculum to enable teachers to combine classroom learning with fundraising for people who are homeless.

Lisa will also be creating an academic paper on the ongoing study of Backpack beds and why they are needed. She wants the myths of who and why people become homeless to be exposed along with raising support to give dignity to the homeless community.

Rebecca Ho

Charity: Touched By Olivia Foundation
www.touchedbyolivia.com.au

Rebecca is aiming to achieve what otherwise would take 'Touched By Olivia Foundation' 5 plus years without a dedicated resource for 1 year.

Rebecca will create an online forum for the medical experts of Sydney's Children's Hospital to publish case studies on vascular birthmarks (lymphangioma) for the public to access. She will work with an existing template used in the USA and Copenhagen to deliver best practise for clinicians to share expertise and families suffering to share and compare information.

Rebecca will also focus on the delivery of 3 more all ability playgrounds across Australia to extend their award winning 'Livvi's place' concept that enables children, regardless of ability or play side by side.
