What is overage?

Overage is the amount of data usage that exceeds your plan's data allowances

Overage rates are charged at 10 cents per megabyte (MB). If you use more data in a month than your plan includes call Customer Care as soon as possible and we'll help you work out a plan to reduce your usage, or increase your mobile data allowance.

Your smartphone uses data every time it accesses the internet. This could be via an app, or the browser. To avoid unexpected costs there are two important things you need to know.

Which activities use the most data?

Apps such as Onavo will help identify which services are using the most data. You can also access helpful information if you are registered for  My Vodafone and on the Your Bill Explained pages.

How to minimise data usage

One of the ways you can keep data usage to a minimum is to switch off mobile data altogether if you don't need it. There are different methods depending on the smartphone, so check out these handy guides:

You can set up balance alerts to warn you when your bill has reached a nominated amount. Balance alerts can be set up once you've logged in to the My Account section of My Vodafone.

If you notice your usage reaching its limit too soon, you could purchase extra data to ensure you have enough to suit your online activities.

The best way to avoid accidentally going over your data limit is to add a month to month Mobile Internet Add-on to your plan. These packs range from $5 to $25 and give you additional data each month to use in Australia on Vodafone's GPRS/3G network. Plus, if you do go over your included data and your Mobile Internet pack Add-on, your overage rate will be just 2 cents per MB (or $20 per GB), a lot less than without a Mobile Internet Add-on. You can upsize or downsize your Mobile Internet Add-on each month if you decide you need more or less data.
