What is tethering?

Tethering your device

Tethering allows you to use your smartphone as a modem, so you can use it to connect another device to the internet. You can tether any compatible device with a USB port, or Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity – like your laptop, game consoles and tablets. Check if your plan allows for tethering.

What is a hotspot?

A hotspot is a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signal made by your smartphone that enables you to connect a compatible Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled device to the internet. All you do to share your connection with your other devices, colleagues, friends and family is let them connect using your password.

What does it cost?

Apart from the cost of a USB cable, there is no cost to set up a hotspot on your enabled smartphone. There will however be additional data usage, especially if multiple devices are connected and using high-demand activities like online gaming or streaming videos. We would strongly recommend adding a Data Add-on if you decide to tether.

Would a mobile broadband modem be better?

For frequent users, or users looking for a faster experience, tethering may not the best option because your connection may interfere with your ability to take and receive calls. In these cases, another option is to use a mobile broadband modem like the Pocket WiFi Extreme or USB Extreme.

The advantages are that it's a dedicated Wi-Fi or USB connection so you will get longer battery life and better performance. Plus, Pocket WiFi Extreme can connect multiple devices at the same time. There is a range of 12 and 24 month, month to month, and prepaid options to choose from.
