GOAL! Vodafone scores Brazil ahead of 2014 FIFA World Cup

Roam for $5 in 47 countries around the globe

Vodafone today announced it had added Brazil to its growing range of $5-a-day international roaming destinations ahead of the much anticipated 2014 FIFA World Cup which begins in June this year.

Chief Marketing Officer Kim Clarke said: “Vodafone is continuing to make it affordable for travellers to use their smartphones overseas. We’re aiming to put a smile on the face of every Vodafone customer heading to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup because they’ll be able to Facebook, Instagram and tweet every exciting moment to their friends and family back home.

“The addition of Brazil means there are now 47 countries Vodafone customers can travel in overseas and use their mobile just as if they were at home in Australia. There’s no expensive per-minute rate to receive a call, the cost of calling back home to Australia is just charged at a local rate and you can use your existing data plan,” Ms Clarke said. “What could be simpler?”

Australia ranks in the top five countries in the world when it comes to applying for the more than 2.6 million 2014 FIFA World Cup tickets on offer.

“More than 80,000 Aussies applied for tickets in the first round alone so we are confident the demand for fair roaming rates for Brazil is there. We want our customers travelling to Brazil to be able to focus on the football, not worry about coming home to a massive phone bill.”

In March Vodafone announced changes to its calling and data rates for more than 200 countries outside the $5-a-day list coming into effect 23 April. Introducing a simple $1 fee for a 1-minute call, the company also sliced its data charges by a staggering 90 per cent so customers would pay $1 per megabyte.

Vodafone also extended its $5-a-day international roaming plan to all in market postpaid plans in a direct response to customer demand. Vodafone launched its $5 roaming plans as part of its flagship Red plans in August last year, and they remain the best value postpaid plans available in the market.

Customers travelling in Brazil can enjoy $5-a-day roaming from 23 April 2014.
