Vodafone offers unlimited weekend data and IDD calls to five countries until 26 April on Prepaid $30, $40, $50 Caps

Vodafone today announced it is removing all data charges and standard international call charges to its five most popular overseas destinations – China, the UK, US, India and New Zealand – on weekends until 26 April 2015 for Prepaid $30, $40 and $50 Cap customers, as part of its weekend freedom initiative.

The move to remove all weekend data charges and standard international call charges to the big five is being led by Loo Fun Chee, Vodafone’s new Chief Marketing Officer, who joined Vodafone last month and wants to encourage Prepaid $30, $40 and $50 Cap customers to make the most of their weekend downtime without worrying about the cost.

“Many Prepaid customers have told us they love Vodafone 4G, our large data allowances and great deals on international calling. But they also told us they keep a close eye on their data usage as they’re unsure of how much data different activities and apps use. They’re worried it will use up all their credit,” said Ms Chee.

“Six months ago we launched Data Workout to help Postpaid customers understand their data usage. We gave them two months of unlimited data usage so they could spend time setting up their phones and experiencing new services without worrying about the cost. It’s been a successful approach and customers who completed the trial told us they are more informed and confident about their data use.”

Vodafone says it wants to encourage Prepaid $30, $40 and $50 Cap customers to boost their data awareness with the company’s weekend freedom trial.

“We want to empower our Prepaid Cap customers to gain more confidence about their data use while having some fun doing the things they love to do on their smartphones,” said Ms Chee.

The company has combined its two most popular weekend freebie events of last year – free data and international calling – into its three month weekend freedom trial.

“Last year our free data and international calling weekends saw our customers break usage records. They really showed us how much these services are a big, huge passion point for them. “

During Vodafone’s free data weekend in June last year customers used more than 590 terabytes worth of data. To put that number into perspective, it’s more than double the usual weekend data traffic, and equivalent to streaming 100 million songs or downloading almost 12 million apps. Vodafone’s free International Calling weekend, held in October 2014 to celebrate the company’s 21st anniversary in Australia, saw triple the usual weekend traffic.

Vodafone’s weekend freedom trial is among a number of bold initiatives Vodafone has delivered to tackle common customer gripes. These include lowering the cost of using a phone when you’re overseas with award-winning $5-a-day roaming, introducing Data Workout to boost data use awareness and automated data top-ups to eliminate bill shock.

Vodafone’s weekend freedom trial begins this weekend and runs until 26 April 2015. Each weekend until then, Prepaid $30, $40 and $50 Cap customers will not be charged for data used in Australia and calls made to China, the UK, US, India and New Zealand from 12am Saturday until 11.59pm Sunday wherever they are in Australia.
