Vodafone reaches first milestone in network upgrade

An enhanced experience on new core network

Wednesday, 8 July 2015 – Vodafone has announced it has reached a major milestone in its core network upgrade with all customers now using the new network for 4G data sessions.

Chief Technology Officer Benoit Hanssen said Vodafone was building a network of the future with Ericsson.

“All Vodafone customers using 4G to download, upload and stream content on their devices are now connected to our new core network,” Mr Hanssen said.

“Our new core network offers greater agility and flexibility, and for customers that means a better 4G experience.

“Through our investment, we’ve created a strong, stable and reliable network, and we’re now building on that with the expansion of our new world-class core network.”

Mr Hanssen said one of the next network developments would be the introduction of Voice over 4G, also known as VoLTE, which is planned for later this year.

“We’re seeing customer demand for fast 4G data continuing to grow. VoLTE will allow customers to stay on the 4G network when taking or receiving voice calls, instead of switching to 3G,” Mr Hanssen said.

“VoLTE will deliver a superior call experience with reduced connection times, while customers continue to enjoy Vodafone’s high definition audio quality.

“One of the exciting benefits of VoLTE is that customers will be able to multitask on 4G on their smartphone.

“For example, if a customer wants to browse the net while having a conversation on the same device, they’ll still have access to fast 4G data speeds.

“Our network is continually growing and evolving, and we’re committed to delivering for our customers a network which is fast, reliable and versatile.” Vodafone’s 4G network reaches 96 per cent of Australia’s metropolitan population.
