What do you want to use it for?
Working out why you want a tablet is a good way to narrow down your options. If you’re a student hoping to use a tablet for note-taking in lectures, you might be after a tablet that is compact enough to carry around all day. If you’re wanting it at home to play games or watch movies, then you’ll probably benefit from a tablet with a larger screen and faster processing speed. Once you’ve got an understanding of how you’ll be using your tablet, you can focus your search down to just the relevant specs.
If you have particular apps in mind for your tablet, make sure the app is available on the operating system of the tablet you choose. It is also valuable to consider the devices you already have. Some people prefer to be consistent with the operating system across their devices. Though it isn’t essential, having an iPhone as well as an iPad can create a more streamlined experience when sharing content across your devices.
The size and the camera
If you want to take your tablet travelling or use it for general photo-taking, then you’ll have two things to prioritise while you are shopping around – size and camera quality. You want a screen big enough to show off the awesome pictures you take, but you might still want a small enough device to easily fit it into a backpack or your carry-on luggage. If you wish to use your tablet to replace a camera, then you will want to keep an eye out for the tablet with the best video capture and the highest megapixel lens.
Storage capacity and processing power
If you’re hoping to replace your laptop or home computer with a tablet, or if you plan on storing more than a few games on it, the main thing you’ll need to consider is storage size. It takes a lot of processing power to run games or to function the way a laptop or desktop would. Some tablets offer a desktop display experience to make it feel like you’re using a computer, which might be something to consider if you are hoping to use it as a replacement for the home computer. If you want to download a bunch of apps but don’t want to pay for a device with bigger internal storage – it is also possible to access external storage (like a compatible USB stick, or a MicroSD card) or cloud storage (such as Google Drive).
