Sydney restaurant MARTA is riding the tech revolution to deliver its customers exceptional service straight from their smartphones. From real time reservations to personalised service, chef Flavio Carnevale is harnessing the power of Vodafone’s network to ensure an unrivalled customer experience for his patrons from their very first booking.

Restaurant’s come and go frequently in the harbour city and Sydney’s foodies are tough to please. Italian born chef Flavio Carnevale realised if he wanted to maintain his edge in this on-demand world, providing patrons with the best food and wine was not enough. He needed to take advantage of technology to enhance his customer’s experience.

For Flavio the initial realisation of the benefits of tech came soon after opening his first restaurant Popolo in Sydney’s Rushcutter’s Bay. When booking portal Dimmi (now The Fork) approached the restauranteur with an online booking proposal, the chef says it took some convincing for him to implement the service.

 

Today he says real time bookings are one of the best services he’s implemented at his new, venture, MARTA.

“The ease for our customers to be able to book directly online, change their time, cancel their booking all in ‘real-time’ is a positive for them and us,” Flavio says.

Of course, The Fork’s functionality is dependent on a reliable network and Flavio says having Vodafone as his service provider has ensured the system runs at its optimum.

“The fast speed internet is fantastic,” says Flavio with regards to his Vodafone nbnTM service “As our reservation system is active in real time, customers will book/cancel/change times online during service hours on the same night as they’re coming, so having reliable internet service is essential.

“We are also able to package our service to suit our needs. We consolidate our service and bills so everything is on there: iPhones, iPads, modems and internet.”

 

MARTA is one of the city’s only traditional trattorias. Flavio tells us the vision for the restaurant was to immerse his customers in the full authentic experience of true Roman food.

“I wanted to introduce Sydney to the food I ate in the small trattorias on my way to and home from work in the neighbourhoods of Rome.

“MARTA has something for everyone. It’s a communal table for celebrations, intimate tables for couples, a bar area for drop-ins, and a piazza for those who love the sun. It’s a slice of Rome in Rushcutters Bay.

 

“It’s always been my greatest passion to cook – even as a small child I would be on a stool watching, attempting, tasting everything my grandmothers made while my mum was next door running our butcher business.”

To keep the trattoria’s authenticity alive, Flavio returns frequently to Europe in search of supplies and inspiration where he uses $5 Roaming allowing him to use his plan in 80 countries for $5 extra per day*. Again, Vodafone’s services help the restauranteur go that extra mile.

“When travelling overseas for personal or work purposes, I can cap my international roaming costs to $5 per day (if I stay within my plan’s allowances) which is sensational,” he exclaims.

Best of all, Flavio says, his Vodafone service allows him to keep in touch with his beloved family in Italy from Australia. Vodafone’s Endless Data gives Flavio as much data as he can use in Australia at a speed of up to 1.5Mbps**.

“I have two young daughters, so being able to FaceTime their grandparents with a clear strong connection and not having to worry about running out of data means we can speak for as long as we want.”

Which is good news for Carnevale. He’s going to need all that time to get his Nonna to give up her secret ragu recipe if he has any hopes of putting it on the menu!
