Being a student can often leave your bank account running dry during the university year, but if you plan ahead, there are a few simple ways to make your money go further. A lot of the time, all you need is your mobile phone!

1. Download some helpful money apps

Nothing holds you accountable for your spending like a Push Notification telling you that you’ve spent hundreds of dollars on takeaway this month. Depending on which bank you’re with, your bank’s app will probably do this – you should definitely download this if you haven’t already to track down your nearest ATM and keep an eye on that ‘Current Balance’ number.

If you prefer something specifically designed for budgeting, try Pocketbook – a budgeting and expense tracker app that will securely connect to your bank account and break down your spending by category automatically. The app also allows you to create budgets for each category and track how you’re doing.

2. Sell your old textbooks at the start of the year

Before you get hit with the astronomical cost of textbooks at the start of the university year, get ahead by selling your old ones online to make some extra cash! It’s easy to do with websites like Gumtree, but there are also specific textbook selling websites and apps, like the Co-op or Jekkle (which allows you to buy or rent cheap textbooks). So, what are you waiting for? Let go of your hoarding tendencies and make a few bucks!

3. Get on a great value phone plan with the inclusions you need

If you start going over your data allowances for the month, it can easily add up and leave you in a tricky spot. The easiest way to avoid this is by getting a great deal on a plan that includes all the necessary inclusions.

Conveniently for you, we’ve got some awesome deals on selected Red Plans with a new phone and SIM Only plans when you bring your own phone. Get up to 10% off monthly fees on Red Plans OR up to 20% off selected SIM Only plans – but hurry, offer ends 10.04.18. T&Cs apply1.

4. Take advantage of every student discount possible

A great way to find out which brands do student discounts is by attending your university’s O-Week. You might even catch our Vodafone stall there if you’re lucky!

Plus, check out UNiDAYS for a comprehensive list of discounts you can get for a number of different products and services. You’ll find out where you can grab a saving, and get the codes you need to do it by signing into their website or app.

5. Start investing in your future (one coffee at a time)

Finding extra money to somehow invest is pretty scary – but luckily Acorns has come up with an interesting solution. The app will automatically invest the change from your daily purchases into a diversified portfolio of exchange traded funds. For instance, if you pay $3.50 for a coffee, $0.50 will be transferred to your investment account. You can also set up recurring investment amounts or lump sums into your account to set aside more money to invest. As with all investments, there are risks, but the idea is that your money should grow over time (depending on the performance of the markets, interest rates and the economy).
