Transform your diet
Do you start each new year with the intention to change your eating habits for the better? While it may seem easy from the outset, maintaining a healthy diet is no easy task. Get yourself a meal plan that is both nutritious and tasty with the app Mealime. The app offers a range of different plan types to choose from, including low carb and paleo. Then, Mealime will create a personalised meal plan based on your allergies, disliked foods and how many people you’re cooking for, so that it’s suited to your specific needs. Pick your favourite healthy recipes and Mealime will even generate a weekly grocery list for you.
Having another language under your belt can be extremely useful – and Duolingo’s gamified lesson style transforms learning a new language from a chore into a hobby. Through the app, you can hone your reading, listening and speaking skills while maintaining a streak count (the number of days in a row that you’ve worked on your chosen language). Duolingo has over 30 language courses to choose from, including even fictional languages like Game of Thrones’ High Valyrian and Star Trek’s Klingon.

If you’re looking to become more musical this new year, you should check out the app Yousician, developed by expert music teachers. Available to those looking to master guitar, bass, piano, ukulele or even singing, Yousician listens to your playing and gives you instant feedback so that you can improve. The app can be used by beginners or more advanced musicians and guides you through lessons with step-by-step video tutorials. With over 1500 missions and exercises as well as weekly challenges between you and other users, you’ll be discovering your musical side in no time!
Is this year the year you’ve promised to get on top of your finances? Forget confusing spreadsheets and sign up to the budgeting and expense tracker app Pocketbook for free. You can sync the app to your Australian bank accounts and then have 80% of your transactions categorised — plus identify any upcoming bills. Having all your transaction information in one place is a great way to identify your spending habits and where improvements need to be made. The app will also generate a weekly summary of your budget, making it very easy to keep track of your finances. We also recommend trying out the ‘Safely Spend’ feature, which is a running average of your discretionary spend (e.g. dinners, groceries, etc) based on your monthly salary minus your monthly bills. Who said saving was hard?
Get a good night’s sleep
A good night’s sleep can make a world of difference. To help you get on top of your sleep schedule, try out the alarm clock and sleep tracking app, Sleep Cycle. The app tracks your sleep patterns in order to wake you up when you feel most rested – during the light sleep phase. According to Sleep Cycle, waking up during your light sleep phase is comparable with waking up naturally without an alarm clock. Sleep Cycle’s technology tracks sleep patterns through sound and vibration analysis, all from your bedside table or close by on your bedroom floor.
