A trip overseas can create memories that last a lifetime. Whether you’re enjoy some ocean breeze in Fiji or perusing a hawkers market in Thailand, having your phone with you makes it easier for you to stay in contact and to share your experiences with loved ones. But no one wants to be worrying about their phone’s whereabouts every second of their trip - that’s why we’ve compiled a list of helpful tips to ensure your phone is always safe and secure when abroad.

Hide your valuables with a travel belt

Travel belts are a useful way to discreetly conceal your valuables – from currency to cameras and even your mobile phone. They’re inexpensive, with a quality belt going for as little as $5. Travel belts are a great method of storing your phone, due to their slim design and are inconspicuously worn under your shirt. This allows you to go about your day without showcasing your stuffed pockets or bulky bum bag to potential pickpockets.

Protect your device in a waterproof pouch

Purchasing a waterproof pouch is a sure-fire approach to preventing water-related phone damage, as spending time poolside or at the beach is an essential part of experiencing many holiday destinations. Besides being reasonably cheap, waterproof pouches offer a variety of benefits to enhance your time in the water. Most waterproof pouches will be made of buoyant material, so the risk of your device sinking is lessened. Certain waterproof pouches can also enrich your experience, allowing you to use your phone’s touch screen through the casing, as well as take underwater photos with your phone.

Reduce your risk of mobile cybercrime

There are a few easy steps you can take to minimise your chances of experiencing cybercrime. Firstly, before leaving on your trip, back up all files on your phone to your home computer or hard drive before deleting them to ensure they do not fall into the wrong hands. You should improve password protection on your phone with two-factor authentication (such as passcode & touch ID) and also uncache any passwords, usernames or email addresses stored in your device, so that your bank or social media accounts can’t be automatically accessed if your phone is unlocked. Avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as this can allow cyber criminals to view your online activity.

Enable Find My Phone before you leave

Find-my-phone software is built into most phones and will allow you to track your phone remotely – granted you have another device to search with. A lost or missing phone can be recovered if you know how to prepare in advance, so ensure you enable find-my-phone before you leave for your trip, as it will also give the ability to remotely wipe data from your phone if it is stolen.
