How can I check 4G and 5G coverage in my area?

Check the predicted 4G and 5G coverage levels of our mobile network by entering an address, suburb or postcode in the coverage checker at the top of this page. You can also enter your device type for more accurate results. 

Results will be displayed as either Good, Moderate, Basic or No Coverage.

The map and results provide general guidance only for when outdoors at ground level. Your actual network experience may vary.

Why is there a difference between the level of coverage displayed in your coverage checker and my own experience?

The mobile network coverage map shows where you are likely to be able to connect to a mobile network when outdoors and at ground level. It is based on technical modelling that predicts where coverage should be available, and where possible, how strong that coverage may be.

The map provides general guidance only. It does not guarantee that you will always be able to connect or that you will experience the quality of connection shown. The map does not apply if you are indoors or in a vehicle. Indoor coverage depends on building construction and where you are located inside the building. For example, you may have difficulty connecting, or experience poorer performance, if you are inside a building with thick walls, few windows, or if you are in a basement.

The map does not apply to phones or devices that are not properly configured or that are incompatible with the mobile networks. Not all network features and data speeds are possible on all phones or devices.

Which network will my phone use?

Your device will connect to 5G or 4G based on location, device type, plan, and usage (calls, SMS, data). 

If 5G is unavailable at a location or your device or plan doesn't support it, your device will use 4G (if available). How you use your device may also impact which network you use. For example, depending on your device, you may make calls using the 4G network, and use data on the 5G network, even in areas with 5G coverage and with a plan with 5G access.

Does mobile network coverage extend offshore or at sea?

Our coverage maps may show signal extending up to around 100 metres offshore from the shoreline. However, your ability to connect can vary depending on conditions such as weather, tides, sea state, as well as your device and antenna. Mobile coverage at sea is not guaranteed and shouldn’t be relied on as your primary method of emergency communication.

Why do 5G devices have different 5G coverage?

Newer 5G devices support wider frequency bands, improving connection range and expanding coverage. There are also differences in network modes between 5G devices.

If you purchased a 5G device from another provider, you may not have access to our full 5G coverage. Check our list of approved devices to see which have been tested and optimised for use on our network.

What can I do if my device doesn’t support 5G?

If your device doesn’t support 5G, you may still be able to connect to our 4G network (if available). You can also consider upgrading to a 5G-approved device with a plan that is 5G-enabled to use our 5G network.

How can I check the current network status in my area?

The quickest way is to use our Network Status Checker. It shows any planned upgrades, maintenance or outages in your area.

When will 5G be available in areas where I can only access 4G?

We are working to roll out 5G coverage across Australia. While we continue to expand our 5G network, you can still connect to our 4G network (where available).

Who can request access to underlying coverage map data?

The following specified organisations are able to request access to and extract underlying geospatial map data contained in the map for analytical purposes:

  • Emergency services organisations
  • The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
  • The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
  • The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
  • Triple Zero Custodian
  • Relevant government departments
  • The New South Wales Government Telecommunications Authority
  • Other public bodies with responsibilities for managing or coordinating emergency responses. 

Other organisations or persons may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
