Here we answer your burning questions and keep you in the loop with what we're up to with our network.

Vodafone 4G

You might have heard we've been clocking some of the fastest speeds around. So you've probably got a few questions. Here's your crash course on Vodafone 4G.

And just a heads up - all data speeds rely on a number of factors including user numbers, local conditions, congestion, the device and its software, download source, general internet traffic and access to enabled sites.

What’s 4G, and what’s so good about it? show

4G is the 4th generation of mobile network technology, giving you faster speeds and an overall better internet experience. You’ll definitely notice a difference when you’re gaming, streaming, downloading and surfing. It’s fast.

What’s the difference between 3G and 4G? show

In a word - speed. Vodafone 4G provides lightning fast mobile internet speeds (2-40Mbps). Impressive right? Vodafone 4G is available in selected areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong and Darwin (with a 4G device and an active prepaid recharge or plan).

4G is a data-only network. That means that when you make or receive a call, your service will automatically switch from 4G onto the Vodafone 3G network. When you make or receive a call, you'll notice the '4G' or 'LTE' symbol on your screen will switch to a 3G symbol. When you finish your call, your service will reconnect back onto 4G where available.

What’s the difference between the names LTE and 4G? show

Short answer? Nothing. 4G is often referred to as LTE which stands for ‘Long Term Evolution’. Different handset manufacturers refer to both terms so on an iPhone you will see ‘LTE’ on the screen (when in 4G coverage) and in your menu settings, whereas on Android devices you could have both ‘4G’ and 'LTE' on your screen and in menu settings.

The Vodafone 4G network is available in selected areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong and Darwin (with a 4G device and an active prepaid recharge or plan).

We’re activating new 4G sites all the time so head to the Coverage Checker to see if you’re covered.

How will I know where 4G is? show

When you’re getting 4G coverage on your 4G-ready phone, you’ll see either '4G' or 'LTE' appear next to the signal bars at the top of your screen.

To check 4G coverage in a specific location: Use our Coverage Checker.

Will my device always stay connected to 4G? show

You might notice that your device is switching between 3G and 4G coverage as you move around - that’s because it will automatically select the strongest signal for the area you’re in. As our network continues to grow throughout the year, you will notice that your device will spend more and more time on 4G over 3G.

When will 4G be available in NT? show

Our Engineer’s are working hard, we’re looking to extend our 4G network into these areas in the near future.

Which devices in Vodafone’s range are 4G-ready? show

You can identify the 4G devices from our range because they come with a big, red 4G logo.

To check if your existing device is 4G-ready and to enable 4G on it, use our handy device set-up tool to step you through the process of enabling 4G.

What is the difference between 4G-ready and 4G-enabled devices? show

A 4G-ready device has 4G hardware and just requires a setting change or a software update from the manufacturer to enable it.
A 4G-enabled device does not require any change to work on 4G.

To help you convert your phone from 4G-ready to 4G-enabled, use our device set-up tool.

Can I turn 4G off? show

Yes. You have two options to turn off 4G. If you want to permanently disable it, call us on 1555 or go in store and we can block 4G access on your service.

Otherwise, you can deactivate 4G in your phone or tablet's menu settings. This lets you easily turn it off and on when you want. However, if you choose this option and update your phone or tablet's software in the future, 4G may default back 'on', so watch out for that.
