4G is the 4th generation of mobile network technology, giving you faster speeds and an overall better internet experience. You’ll definitely notice a difference when you’re gaming, streaming, downloading and surfing. It’s fast.
In a word - speed. Vodafone 4G provides speeds up to fifteen times faster (2-40Mbps) than the current average speed on the Vodafone 3G network (1Mbps). Impressive right? This is available in selected metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Wollongong (with a 4G ready device and plan).
4G is a data-only network. That means that when you make or receive a call, your service needs to drop from 4G onto either the Vodafone 3G or 2G networks. When you make or receive a call, you'll notice the '4G' or 'LTE' symbol on your screen will switch to a 3G symbol. When you finish your call, your service will try to reconnect back onto 4G.
Short answer? Nothing. 4G is often referred to as LTE which stands for ‘Long Term Evolution’. Different handset manufacturers refer to both terms so on an iPhone you will see ‘LTE’ on the screen (when in 4G coverage) and in your menu settings, whereas on Android devices you could have both ‘4G’ and 'LTE' on your screen and in menu settings.
The Vodafone 4G network is concentrated in selected metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra. It’s also available in other outer metro areas like Wollongong, Gold Coast and Newcastle that have 4G sites.

When you’re getting 4G coverage on your 4G-ready phone, you’ll see either '4G' or 'LTE' appear next to the signal bars at the top of your screen.

You might notice that your device is switching between 3G and 4G coverage as you move around - that’s because it will automatically select the strongest signal for the area you’re in. As our network continues to grow throughout the year, you will notice that your device will spend more and more time on 4G over 3G.
We are activating 4G in selected metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Wollongong, Gold Coast, Newcastle and Canberra. We won't launch 4G in TAS or NT just yet. We’re looking to extend our 4G network into these areas in the near future.
You can identify the 4G devices from our range because they come with a big, red 4G logo.

A 4G-ready device has 4G hardware and just requires a setting change or a software update from the manufacturer to enable it.
A 4G-enabled device does not require any change to work on 4G.

Yes. You have two options to turn off 4G. If you want to permanently disable it, call us on 1555 or go in store and we can block 4G access on your service.
Otherwise, you can deactivate 4G in your phone or tablet's menu settings. This lets you easily turn it off and on when you want. However, if you choose this option and update your phone or tablet's software in the future, 4G may default back 'on', so watch out for that.

Older SIM cards (pre Micro or Nano SIMs) will not work on Vodafone 4G. If your SIM card was cut down to a smaller size using a SIM cutter or scissors, it won’t be able to connect to 4G. This problem is easily fixed with a SIM swap. You can pick up a replacement SIM card from a Vodafone store or call us on 1555.
We are working to make sure you have a great experience on 4G here in Australia, but 4G roaming will not be available for a while.
Don’t worry though, you can still take your 4G device and roam to any of our existing 3G international roaming partners.
Just like our current roaming, please make sure your handset is compatible in the roaming country you are travelling to. You can find out more about roaming here.
Unfortunately inbound 4G roaming will not be available for a while.

Vodafone 3G+ is the next generation of network using DC-HSPA+ (Dual Carrier-High Speed Packet Access) technology. Essentially this technology will deliver faster download speeds than ever before on the Vodafone network.
We are introducing Vodafone 3G+ now in selected metropolitan areas. The new Vodafone 3G+ network is being progressively rolled out to selected metropolitan areas of Sydney and Newcastle, Melbourne, Geelong and Mornington Peninsula, Brisbane and Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth. These typically are areas where demand for high-speed mobile data is highest.
Our new Vodafone 3G+ network will deliver download speeds that are up to eight times faster than our current average download speeds on the Vodafone 3G network. However this will vary due to a range of factors including the device type, areas where Vodafone 3G+ is activated, peak and off-peak usage times and respective distance from the nearest base station.
We will deploy Vodafone 3G+ on 850MHz, 900MHz and 2100MHz.
All mobile phones, tablets, and mobile broadband devices that are in use today will continue to work on 3G and 2G. However, to access Vodafone 3G+ speeds, you will need a Vodafone 3G+ compatible device as well as be in a Vodafone 3G+ area. New state-of-the-art equipment is being installed at all of our sites across Australia to prepare our network for 4G.
1000 sites are already live on our new 850MHz network, which is designed to provide better in-building coverage and faster data speeds for compatible smartphones and mobile broadband devices, and there's more to come.
The new 3G network will run on 850MHz frequency, which is capable of penetrating deeper indoors than our existing frequency. If you've got a handset or modem that's 850MHz compatible and you are within an 850MHz coverage area, it should mean an improved experience with better indoor coverage, faster download speeds and stronger signal strength than before from Vodafone.
