What is Vodafone 5G?

5G is the newest mobile network technology and has the potential to make our lives smarter, safer, and more efficient. As the next generation of cellular network technology for both mobile and fixed wireless applications, 5G can contribute to increased data speeds and lower latency. It also offers exciting opportunities in healthcare, education and agriculture.

What you’ll need to get 5G ready

5G approved device

You’ll need a compatible 5G approved device that is configured to our 5G network.

5G coverage area

You’ll need to be in a 5G coverage area. You can still use your 5G approved device in 4G/3G areas. This page is updated regularly as new 5G areas are switched on.

Vodafone mobile plan

To connect to Vodafone 5G, you’ll need to sign up to any of our current phone and prepaid plans.

When and where will Vodafone 5G be available?

While we continue to support you on our best ever 4G network, Vodafone’s 5G network is rolling out to selected areas in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Central Coast and Geelong.

5G is available in selected areas in more than 350 suburbs around Australia and we currently have over 1,600 sites in the planning and design phase. Our current plan is to have over 1000 sites live by the end of 2021 across the 6 most populous cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra) as well as other areas in VIC, NSW and QLD. This page is updated regularly as new 5G areas are switched on.

And although 5G might not be available in your area yet, upgrading to a 5G approved device will still enable you to connect to our existing 4G/3G networks plus allow you to connect to our 5G network once it’s ready. What makes Vodafone 5G different?

Vodafone will not charge its customers extra for access to our 5G network on our current phone plans.

As a global brand, we are also proud to say that our customers using $5 Roaming with a 5G approved device will shortly be able to enjoy 5G in a few of Australia's favourite overseas destinations such as the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland.

2015

Vodafone Australia started a multi-year project to move most of our mobile network onto future-proof ‘dark fibre’ transmission.

2017

We embarked on a world-leading project to ‘virtualise’ our core network. By moving our network to the cloud, it will enable us to be more agile to respond to technology advancements, deploy services faster, and ultimately deliver a better user experience.

2020

The first Vodafone 5G sites are switched on in areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth..

Which 5G approved phones are available through Vodafone?

To see our available 5G approved phones, keep an eye out for our 5G logo when browsing through our mobile phones.

Can I bring my own 5G device?

You can bring your own 5G device to Vodafone on a SIM Only or prepaid plan, however it may not be compatible with our 5G network. We instead recommend you purchase your 5G approved device through Vodafone. Check out our approved devices to see which have been tested and optimised for use on Vodafone’s network.

Do I need a new SIM card to access 5G?

No. you can access the Vodafone 5G network with your current SIM card, as long as it’s in a 5G approved device.
