Frequently asked questions

What is a fibre upgrade?

A fibre upgrade is a Fibre-To-The-Premises (FTTP) technology upgrade from nbn®. Having an FTTP connection will mean that fibre will be connected all the way to your home – it's the best nbn® option available in Australia.

Who is eligible for fibre upgrade?

This Upgrade offer is available to new and existing Vodafone nbn® customers at residential addresses determined to be eligible by nbn®.

If you currently have a Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connection, you may be eligible for a technology upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). nbn® continues to expand Fibre Upgrade eligibility to new areas.

Fibre Upgrade is only available on high-speed plans: nbn® Home Fast+, nbn® Home Superfast and nbn® Home Ultrafast.

To check whether you are eligible, call 1300 652 846, chat to us or visit a Vodafone store.

Are there any additional costs with the fibre upgrade?

A standard installation is free if you’re eligible for the upgrade and on an eligible high-speed plan (additional costs apply if you need to upgrade your plan).  nbn co limited may charge you an additional fee to proceed with non-standard installation.

Do I need a new modem for my fibre upgrade?

All Vodafone Super Wi-Fi modems and TP-Link VX420-G2H modems will work with an upgraded fibre connection.

Our fibre upgrade plans require a high-speed compatible modem. You can find our high-speed compatible modem requirements here.

Devices that don’t support Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet may not be able to achieve the speeds available on our high-speed nbn® plans with maximum speeds higher than 100Mbps. If you’re using the Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub™ 1.0, it is not compatible with our Home Fast+ Plan, nbn® Home Superfast Plan or nbn® Home Ultrafast Plan.

How long will the fibre upgrade take?

Upgrading to nbn’s Full Fibre typically takes 2–6 weeks, but it can take longer for more complicated installations. During this time, if you’re not already an nbn® customer with us, we’ll set you up with an nbn® Interim Plan so you can get connected quicker. Your old service and new service will overlap for 6 days to avoid any issues, but once your upgrade is complete, we’ll automatically switch you over and reimburse you for the 6-day overlap.

I live at a rental property; can I still get the fibre upgrade?

You’ll need the landlord’s permission to upgrade to nbn’s Full Fibre at their premises as it requires work to the property to set up the connection, such as drilling into walls. Contact your landlord or property manager to get written approval to proceed with the upgrade.

What does a fibre upgrade installation involve?

nbn® will install new equipment inside and outside your premises to complete the upgrade. We will help arrange a time for the installation and update you via SMS.

  • Pre-installation visit (if needed, no one needs to be at home for this visit)

An nbn® installer will assess the exterior of your property to identify any potential obstacles and prepare for your installation appointment. This visit typically takes between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. However, more complex connections may require additional time.

  • Installation appointment (you or someone over 18 needs to be home for this appointment)

An nbn® installer will install the necessary equipment and will need access to both the interior and exterior of your property. This appointment generally takes 3 to 4 hours but may take longer for more complex connections. Depending on your specific installation, there may be some noisy works or temporary service interruptions during the installation. In some cases, you’ll also need an initial appointment first. This will be determined by nbn®.

Once the installation is complete, plug your modem from the old connection into the new FTTP connection. After a few moments, your internet will be ready to use.

Is there any internet downtime during the upgrade?

Your existing connection will be active while your new Fibre line is being installed.

To minimise any issues, there will be a 6-day overlap period where your new Fibre service and your old service are connected at the same time. Your old service will then be automatically switched off and a credit will be added to your account, so you are not out-of-pocket for the overlap period.

Can I get the fibre upgrade if I’m moving to a different address?

Yes, if the location you’re moving to is eligible for the upgrade. You can check your new address in our address checker above and see whether the fibre upgrade is available.

Terms and conditions

nbn® Fibre Upgrade

$0 Fibre Upgrade Offer

The $0 Fibre Upgrade Offer allows eligible existing and new residential nbn® customers to upgrade to nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) (“Upgrade Offer”) when registering for selected nbn® plans (“Eligible Plans”).

These terms and conditions apply specifically to the Upgrade Offer. Other terms and conditions relevant to your service are available here.

Eligibility

The Upgrade Offer is only available at addresses determined to be eligible by NBN Co. Premises must already have an existing NBN FTTN or FTTC connection.

The Eligible Plans for the Upgrade Offer are the Vodafone nbn® Home Fast+, Vodafone nbn® Home Superfast and Vodafone nbn® Home Ultrafast (critical information summary).

Installation

Upgrade requires an nbn® installer to undertake works and install new nbn® equipment inside and outside of the premises.

On the day of your nbn® installation appointment, the nbn® installer requires access to the exterior and interior of your premises. You, or a person over the age of 18, must be at home during this visit to give consent on the location and method of installation. If you are renting, written landlord permission is required. Installation usually takes 2–4 hours, but complex installations may take longer.

The nbn® installer will determine the optimal location for installation and advise on what works are required. Installation works may include drilling through external or internal walls and require access to underfloor, wall or roof cavity spaces. Installation may be required to be at a different location from pre-existing FTTN/C or other nbn® equipment.

The nbn® installer will install two types of boxes: one outside (the nbn® utility box) and one inside (the nbn® connection box). The boxes need to be placed in a dry, cool, ventilated areas that are safe from damage (e.g., away from gas lines and electric boxes). There are additional specific rules for installation, which will be discussed on the day.

The outdoor box:

  • is typically installed near the existing telecoms box at the front of the property;
  • needs to be at least 400 millimetres above the ground; and
  • needs clear space from other utilities.

The indoor box:

  • must be within 12 metres of the outdoor box;
  • should be placed near the Wi-Fi router with a power point within three metres; and
  • should be on the same wall surface as the outdoor box.

If the preferred location for the inside box cannot be used, you can:

  • hire a registered cabler (at your own expense) to arrange a pathway that meets nbn® standards, prior to nbn® service installation; or
  • run an ethernet cable from the nbn® connection box to the preferred location.

After installation, you are responsible for connecting or reconfiguring the modem to the nbn® connection box. There may be a short delay before the new service is available (about 30 minutes on average).

You are responsible for any further internal works (for example, home network ethernet cabling) beyond installation of the nbn® FTTP Network Termination Device.

Further information about your Vodafone nbn® installation can be found here.

Installation timeline

NBN Co advises that a standard installation should be complete within two to six weeks, depending on location and technology type. These service levels are provided for information only and are not guaranteed by NBN Co.

Service activation and billing

While you are waiting for your upgrade installation, we will provide you with an interim pre-fibre service (critical information summary). You will be registered for this interim service at the same time as registering for the Upgrade Offer.

As your interim service is on a nbn® FTTN/C connection, we’ll inform you of your maximum attainable line speed for your service once we receive this information from nbn after activation. If the maximum line speed at your address doesn’t support the speed tier of your interim plan, we’ll apply a credit of $20 to your account. As your service is being upgraded to FTTP, no plan downgrade or cancellation option will be available to you in respect of your interim plan. This maximum attainable line speed check only pertains to your interim pre-fibre plan and will have no impact upon completion of the upgrade to Fibre.

Your new nbn® FTTP service can be activated after installation has been successfully completed. Your existing service will be automatically cancelled six days after your new nbn® FTTP service is activated.

If you have any difficulty connecting to your new nbn® FTTP service, give us a call when you’re at home on 1300 801 122.

Following activation of the new nbn® FTTP service, a $20 credit will be applied to your account. This is to refund you for the six-day period during which you were connected to both your interim pre-fibre service and your new nbn® FTTP service.

Modem requirements

A compatible high-speed modem is required to achieve optimal performance with your new nbn® FTTP service. You can find information about the technical requirements your modem must meet here. For all customers, the actual speeds you experience will vary due to many factors which are explained here.

The Home Fast+ Plan, Home Superfast nbn® Plan and Home Ultrafast nbn® Plan require a high-speed compatible modem.

The Upgrade Offer is available to all nbn® plans. The Modem is $14 per month (‘Undiscounted Price’) or $0 per month (‘Discounted Price’) when you stay connected for 24 months (‘Device Period’). This Discounted Price will appear as a credit on your monthly bill. If you choose to cancel your plan before the end of the Device Period you will need to pay the full Undiscounted Price x months remaining on Device Period. The maximum cost of the Modem is $336 or $0 if you stay connected for 24 months.
